Ms Murphy
Senior infants

WElcome to Ms murphy's senior infants

We are always engaging in fun, playful activities in our classroom.
This makes learning more enjoyable and exciting for us.
Take a look at all the different things we have been getting up to in Room Six!

AISTEAR
Space

In March, we have been learning about Space and our Aistear topic was the space station. We have been learning about what is up in space, the different phases of the moon, all about the planets and we have been learning about nocturnal and diurnal animals. This week in Aistear, we were busy creating space pictures containing all nine planets, role playing in the space station and rocket ship, making aliens and different planets using playdough and playing with rockets and astronauts on the moons surface (the sand). Take a look at what we have been getting up to so far!

Global Citizenship and Energy

As part of our work towards getting our seventh green flag, we have been learning about Fairtrade, the concept of energy, global citizenship and climate change. The green school committee have been very busy. Alongside all of that hard work that we are doing, Ms Reilly organised a slogan competition. The slogan competition was based on global citizenship and energy. Two winners were chosen from each class - have a look below at the two lucky children in our class who won! Ms Reilly also chose three overall winners from the whole school and a girl in our class came in 3rd place for her entry. We are so proud of both of the winners in our class - well done!!

world book DAY
thursday 5th march 2020

On Thursday 5th of March 2020, it was World Book Day. To mark the occasion, Helena Byrne came into our school and told us a variety of short stories. We really enjoyed listening to the storyteller as we were allowed to join in and act out various scenes. We also got to sing some well-known songs with Helena such as 'How Much is That Doggie in the Window?'.

the principal's award

The principal's award is given to a boy or girl who may be working really hard on something in school or someone who may have achieved something special or someone who is really good at following all of the golden rules. This award is given by Ms Blake and the child is nominated by their teacher. One lucky girl in our class won the principal's award for her courage and bravery. She received a principal's award sticker, a principal's award badge and a phone call home to her mam and dad, all to celebrate how amazing she is - we are so proud of you, well done!!

ENGLISH
Procedural writing

We have been focusing on procedural writing since the start of January. We noted that each procedure has a title, a list of equipment and/or ingredients needed and a number of steps to follow. We learned that when we are writing procedures, we need to use sequencing words such as first, next, then and finally. We made some scrumptious cupcakes and then wrote up our own procedure for making them. The children loved making the cupcakes and enjoyed decorating them at the end.

 Grandparents day
Wednesday 29th January 2020

On Wednesday 29th of January 2020, it was Grandparents Day as part of Catholic Schools Week. To mark the occasion, we invited our grandparents into our classroom to play games, make jigsaws, experiment with playdough and read books with us. We had such a nice afternoon with our grandparents and wish they could come to school with us every day!
We made our grandparents some artwork to show just how much they mean to us and how much we love and appreciate them.

The crib

We visited the church after the Christmas holidays to see the crib before it was taken down. We discussed the story of Christmas. We discussed the different people who were in the manger that night. We sang the song 'Away in a Manger' and then we said a prayer. Mary Hendrick, our Parish Resource Person, gave each of us a piece of hay from the manger to bring home which is said to bring great wealth if put into a purse/wallet - wish us all luck!!

OUR CHRISTMAS shows

Our Christmas play for this year was called 'Away in a Manger'. The children worked very hard to learn all the songs and actions. The children's parents helped them to learn their lines off by heart at home. The children put in a lot of effort at all the practises in the hall to make sure they knew when to say they lines. The show was absolutely brilliant, the children were all little superstars and our teacher was very proud of us. Well done boys and girls!!

Some of the boys and girls in our class took part in the International Winter Show also. The children were amazing and were excellent at saying their poems clearly and singing their songs. Well done!!

 EVERY SCHOOL DAY COUNTS
poster competition

As part of the 'Every School Day Counts' campaign, we ran an art competition in Scoil Aonghusa Junior to raise awareness with the children, parents and community about why every school day counts. The children were asked to design a poster on why it is important to come to school every day. One lucky girl in our class came in 2nd place for her poster out of all the Senior Infant children who entered the competition - we are so proud of you, well done!!

People who help us: The vet

In November, our theme was people who help us and our Aistear topic was the Vets Surgery. We have been learning all about the different people who help us - what they can do for us, the equipment they use and what type of people they are. We looked at a few of the community helpers in detail and it amazed us when we realised just how many people help us in our community. We have been super busy in Aistear making tool belts and Garda badges, playing in the vets surgery, matching equipment to the people who use them, building homes for animals, sorting and washing animals, playing community helper bingo and lots more. Take a look at all the different activities we got up to this month!

ANIMAL MAGIC!

As part of Science Week, Ms Reilly invited Animal Magic into our school. Animal Magic was set up to help fund the Rescue and Rehabilitation of our Native Wildlife. Animal Magic brought some amazing animals into our school such as a hare, a meerkat,  two lizards, an owl, a chinchilla and two snakes. We learned lots of different facts about each of these animals and the children were able to pet the animals. The children enjoyed every second of this experience and some of the children even got to hold an animal by themselves. Take a look through the pictures and see the fun we all had!!

Science week 2019
To mark Science week, we carried out three different experiments in our class.
Have a look down below to see them!

 1) The effects of fizzy drinks on our teeth
Equipment needed:
- 3 eggs (acting as our teeth)
- Two fizzy drinks: Fanta Orange and Coca Cola
- Water as the comparison

We put an egg and water into one cup, an egg and Fanta orange into another cup and an egg and Coca Cola into another cup. We left the eggs in the different liquids overnight. When we checked the eggs the next day, we were very surprised. Have a look at the effects that Fanta Orange and Coca Cola had on our teeth (eggs)!! Water is definitely the best drink option to keep our teeth healthy and clean.

 2) The best coin cleaner
Equipment needed:
- Variety of dirty coins
- 'Coin cleaners': Vinegar, lemon juice, Coca Cola, red sauce (ketchup) and water

We put two coins into each of the five bowls which contained the different 'coin cleaners'. We left the coins in the different 'coin cleaners' overnight. We had a look at the coins the next day and we were genuinely shocked at the results. The water had no effect on the coins and it was the lemon juice that was the best coin cleaner out of them all!

 3) Walking water
Equipment needed:
- 5 cups
- Red, blue and green food colouring
- Paper towels or kitchen roll
- Water

We put water into cup 1 with blue food colouring, we put water into cup 3 with green food colouring and we put water into cup 5 with red food colouring. We left cups 2 and 4 empty. Put a paper towel half into one cup and half into the next, almost creating a bridge between two cups that are beside each other. We left the cups overnight and the children couldn't believe what they saw the following morning. The water in each cup travelled through the paper towel and the coloured water mixed to create new colours. Have a look down below!

MATHS WEEK 2019
the Sweet Jar challenge
WINNERS!!

As it was Maths week, Ms O'Connell set up a whole school challenge based on a jar of sweets. Each class had to choose an estimate of how many sweets they thought were in the jar. The class with the correct amount or the closest estimation win all the sweets. The only hint we were given was there were more than 15 sweets and less than 100.
Our class chose the estimate of 55 sweets in the jar and Ms O'Connell announced at community singing that there were 62 sweets in the jar and, because our answer was the closest estimate, we won the challenge!!!
We were delighted with our win - a fantastic end to our Maths week 2019!

MATHS Week 2019
maths trail

To finish off our celebration of Maths week, we went on a Maths trail around the school.
We had lots of fun discovering that Maths is all around us in terms of numbers, shapes, patterns and so on.

Maths week 2019
different Activities

As part of Maths week, we have been taking part in lots of fun activities in our class. We love playing games that involve numbers, shapes and patterns. We have been revising some topics we have already covered and we have been practising some new concepts we have learned this year such as writing number sentences using plus and equals. Have a look at the different activities and games we have been engaging with this year during Maths Week.

a visit from our Community Guard

Our Community Guard, Garda Peter came in to visit us to talk about Halloween safety. Garda Peter had some really good tips for staying safe around Halloween, here are a few of them:
(1) Only go out trick or treating with an adult when it is bright outside
(2) Only go to houses that have lights on and are decorated for Halloween
(3) Never go inside an unknown person's house at Halloween when trick or treating
(4) When at a bonfire, make sure you stand far away where your hands cannot feel any heat from the fire

Halloween

For the last fortnight in October, our Aistear theme is Halloween. We have a Halloween house in our role play corner where we can dress up to go trick or treating... but the house we are going to for trick or treating is owned by witches and wizards who will either hand out sugary sweets or possibly crunchy spiders or juicy eyeballs -  I know what option we would all prefer!! We have been designing our own spooky pumpkins and helping to scoop and carve out a pumpkin, look below for the funky faces we chose for each pumpkin! We are making spooky potions and we are enjoying making bats and mummies at our creative table. We love using Halloween stick puppets in small world because we get to change our voices to sound like the different characters!

English
tackling those Tricky wordS!

In Senior Infants, we love practising our tricky words every day in our stations. As we are always practising our tricky words, we are always getting better at them. Have a look at the fun games we have been playing in class to tackle those tricky words!

SESE
Our family trees

Since we are learning about houses and homes this month, we have been talking about our families too! We know that we all belong to a family and a community. We have been talking about things that families do together and we discussed the different things our families teach us at home such as riding a bike, using our manners etc. We know that families love each other and care for one another. For homework, our parents/guardians helped us to make our own family trees. During show and tell, each child showed and talked about their family trees!
