Our First Day in Second Class!

Picture

Art Lesson Frida Kahlo

We did our self portraits in school. We were learning about using black and white paper and adding colour to them using a range of chosen materials such as paint, markers crayons and oils.

We learned about a very famous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. Frida painted over 55 self portraits and added symbols of things she loved or was experiencing in her painting. She was quite ill for most of her life and art helped her to find happiness and express herself.

We drew our portraits with symbols of things that we liked too and took inspiration from Frida.
Here are a few of the portraits from some of the children in the class. Can you guess who they may be?

We had fun being artists!

Aistear!
Learning through Play!
Theme for October: The Rainforest..

We learned so much about the rainforest in October.
We know where the rainforests are all over the world and which animals live in them.
At our Art Station we made collages of our favourite rainforest animals and a rainforest habitat.
At our construction station we made built tropical trees and plants using lego and animals using playdough.
Using ICT we researched facts about plants and different living things found in the rainforest.
During playful literacy sessions we role played being a vet in the Amazon and a travel agent booking holidays to visit one of the seven main rainforests all over the world. We studied the globe and the map!
It has now become one of our specialist topics. Ask us anything!
As you can see there was a lot of fun involved!

Learning skills to become an Illustrator!

Second class took part in a literacy challenge to win new reading books for our school.
We watched and listened to author and illustrator Chris Judge create Doodle Tiles.
Doodling when we are young can help us us to become great illustrators when we are older!

Check out the video and try to recreate your own Doodle Tiles at home.It is a really fun activity. Especially, for a dull rainy day! Bring some colour into life!

Maths Week

We did a 3d Shape hunt taking photos of items in our school environment.

Learning about car registration plates was fun. We did a Maths Trail and learned about cars in our school car park! Learning is all around us!

We took part in Maths Week estimation challenge and daily problem solving puzzles too!

We are Scientists!

Did you know the symbol for water resistance? It is the first one on our slide.

If you went into a rainforest, what would you wear?

Although it is very hot, it is also very wet!

We did an investigation to see which everyday materials are water resistant.
Turns out plastic and tin foil are the most water resistant!

Autumn Leave Art!

BlueBot Fun!

We are Coders!
Second class are learning about directional and positional language in November.
We are using our problem solving skills to move the Bluebots from one position to another on our charts. Then we are writing our own code to show how we did it!
We are clever!

Aistear :
The Arctic and the Antarctic

We were learning about the Inuit people and the homes they live in.

They live in houses made from blocks of ice called igloos.

We tried to construct our own ice houses using sugar cubes.

We designed a house, trying to make a standing solid structure that went inwards toward the roof.

We tried to improve our designs as we moved along different building stages.

See some of our designs in the photographs.

Aistear:
Designing and constructing snow mobiles to travel in the Arctic and Antarctic.

Our New School Library

The Book Nook!

We are so lucky to have so many

lovely new books to read in our

 school.

Our class love to read. We are great readers!

We have been learning about how

images and creating images

help us to understand a story or book.

We visit our new school library

regularly to pick books that

we enjoy reading by our favourite authors.

Here are some we choose recently:

Picture

The Titanic

We have been doing project work in school and at home learning about the Titanic.

Boys and girls designed a boat that would hopefully float and not sink like the Titanic!

We were learning words such as wide, narrow, thick, thin, heavy, light and dense.

We used play dough for our investigation.

We discovered and wide and thinner structure worked best with good side walls.

Have a look at our boats:

Learning about Procedures and Step by Step Approaches

We are learning about procedure in English Writing.

We made Rice Crispy Buns.

We are going to write a step by step guide on how we did this process.

Keep an eye on our page to see this!
