We are lucky in Scoil Aonghusa Junior to be able to offer Reading Recovery to some of our students.
Reading Recovery is a short term intervention programme to help children who are finding reading and writing difficult. It is aimed at children around 6 years of age.
Children in Reading Recovery attend 30 minute one- to-one lessons every day with a specially trained teacher. During this time the teacher observes the child closely in order to identify what aspects of reading and writing they are finding hard. Lessons are individually designed based on these moment by moment observations. Children usually attend Reading Recovery for around 20 weeks.
During a Reading Recovery session, children usually work on the following areas of Literacy:
Reading familiar books to promote confidence and fluency
Read a new book every day
Work on letter identification
Learn how to break words into parts
Hold a conversation
Write a story
Hear and record sounds in words
The main goal for children in Reading Recovery is to become effective readers and writers and able to work at a level that is average for their class once they finish reading recovery.
Reading Recovery teachers must undergo a year of intensive training. Following this they attend ongoing professional development courses to keep up to date and develop their skills. Our Principal, Ms Blake was the first teacher to train in Reading Recovery in SAJ. Ms McAdam and Ms Buckley are currently working in RR.
If we identify your child as a suitable candidate for a place in Reading Recovery, Ms McAdam or Ms Buckley will contact you and invite you in for a meeting.
Here are some examples of the great writing that takes place during a Reading Recovery Lesson!
